The Syrian Protestant College (SPC), founded in 1866 and now known as the American University of Beirut (AUB), played a pivotal role in shaping modern Lebanon. AUB offered a secular, liberal arts education that attracted students from across the region. It became a center of intellectual and cultural exchange, fostering a generation of Lebanese leaders in various fields. Sarah Smith College, established in 1871, was another important institution founded by American missionaries. It focused on educating women, and empowering them to become active participants in society. Sarah Smith College later merged with AUB, contributing to the university’s commitment to gender equality. The Beirut University College (BUC), founded in 1920, was also established by American missionaries. It offered a practical, vocational education that prepared students for careers in fields such as business, engineering, and agriculture. BUC later became a major contributor to Lebanon’s economic development. The impact of these missionary schools on Lebanese youth has been profound. They introduced modern educational methods, emphasized critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and promoted a spirit of inquiry and innovation. Graduates of these schools became leaders in government, business, academia, and civil society, playing a crucial role in shaping Lebanon’s development. In addition to their academic contributions, missionary schools also played a significant role in promoting social and cultural change. They advocated for women’s rights, supported educational reforms, and promoted tolerance and understanding among different religious and ethnic groups. The legacy of these early missionary schools continues to be felt in Lebanon today. They have helped to establish a strong educational tradition and have contributed to the development of a vibrant and diverse society.
